This study identified and quantified hydrocarbons in both gas and particle phases from C10 to C36, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the semi-volatile organic compounds emitted from traffic. Samples were collected from a street canyon, Marylebone Road (MR), one roof site (WM) above MR, and one in the adjacent Regent’s Park (RU), north of MR in central London to evaluate the change in composition of SVOC during advection from the traffic to the cleaner atmosphere of the urban background. Groups of compounds identified and quantified in gas and particle phases include C¬13-C36 alkanes (n-alkanes and branched alkanes), C12-C25 monocyclic alkanes, C13-C27 bicyclic alkanes and C10-C24 monocyclic aromatics. The ambient concentrations of SVOCs were elevated by the air circulation in the street canyon, and the distribution of hydrocarbons is similar in background and roadside air, indicating the importance of road traffic as a source of hydrocarbons in the urban atmosphere of London. Emission factors were estimated from the concentrations at the MR site and are broadly similar to those measured elsewhere in the world, despite differences in traffic fleet composition.
